European Parliament ready to adopt interim agreement reached with EU Council on ‘Climate Law’

A majority of MEPs are expected to vote in favour of the interim agreement on the ‘Climate Law’ reached with the Council of the European Union on Thursday 24 June at a mini-plenary session of the European Parliament.

The vote will be preceded by a debate on the text, which aims to enshrine the EU’s 2050 climate neutrality objective in EU law and sets a new target of ‘at least 55%’ for reducing the EU’s net greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 (see EUROPE 12703/1)

According to our information, the Greens/EFA group in the Parliament will vote against the ‘Climate Law’, judging it insufficiently ambitious and insufficient to comply with the Paris Agreement, in particular regarding the 2030 target (the Greens/EFA, together with The Left, initially defended a target of at least 65%).

However, some members of the group may prefer to abstain.

The EPP, S&D and Renew Europe groups are expected, on the contrary, to largely support the text.

For their part, the MEPs of The Left seem divided. While Silvia Modig (Finland), the group’s shadow rapporteur on this dossier, has recommended supporting the agreement, a source told us that the majority of the group is likely to vote against.

Finally, the ID group is likely to be largely opposed to the text. The same applies to the ECR group, but probably to a lesser extent. (Original version in French by Damien Genicot)
