European Parliament concerned about future of Euranet Plus radio network

01/06/2021 (Agence Europe)MEP Sabine Verheyen (EPP, Germany) sent a parliamentary question to the European Commission on Thursday 27 May, asking it to clarify its position on the pan-European radio network Euranet Plus. She asked whether the EU institution intends to end direct subsidies to Euranet Plus on 31 December 2021. Such a decision would result in the closure of the coordination office in Brussels and several redundancies in some of the network’s member radio stations. The radio network is indeed in the Commission’s sights. It has recently suffered a negative independent audit due to the treatment of European news by some of the network’s partners, notably Hungarian Radio. The European Commission is said to have a preference for Euronews, while Parliament is said to be leaning towards Euranet Plus. A resolution in Parliament is reportedly under consideration. (PH)
