Portuguese Presidency of EU Council is sounding out Member States on gas legislation revision

The Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union sent a document to the Member States on 28 May to consult them in view of the package of legislative initiatives for a competitive and decarbonised European gas market scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2021.

What are the main themes and issues that deserve further reflection in the ‘Package for competitive, decarbonised gas market’, in a perspective of decarbonisation of the gas market?” is the question posed by the Presidency.

Stressing the need to have a “fully operational” gas market in order to guarantee the security of the Union’s energy supply, Lisbon also questions Member States on how to establish “the best relationship between this review process and other EU strategies”, in particular the energy systems integration and hydrogen strategies, but also other regulations such as the forthcoming new electricity regulations.

These issues are expected to be discussed by Member States’ experts on 22 June in the EU Council’s Energy Working Group.
