01/06/2021 (Agence Europe) – 54 former prime ministers, foreign ministers and senior officials, including former European Commissioners Javier Solana, Karel de Gucht, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, Neil Kinnock, and Chris Patten, on Monday 31 May deplored the increasing number of attacks on the International Criminal Court (ICC). While understanding the concerns about politically motivated complaints and investigations, the signatories say they “strongly believe that the Rome Statute guarantees the highest criteria of justice and provides a crucial avenue to address impunity for the world’s most serious crimes”. They therefore stress the importance for all European governments to firmly support the independence of the ICC and to protect the institution and its staff from any external pressure or threat.
