The European Parliament’s Committee on Agriculture has submitted 216 amendments to the draft resolution on the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) ‘End the Cage Age’. This ECI, registered by the European Commission, calls for the end of cages used for farm animals (see EUROPE 12089/11).
MEPs were rather supportive of this ECI (see EUROPE 12699/12).
Several amendments to their draft resolution call for a revision of the 1998 directive concerning the protection of animals so as to add provisions on banning cages.
One of them calls on the European Commission to propose legislation aiming to phase out cages for farm animals—in particular, those for laying hens, rabbits, pullets, and ducks—by 2027.
The parliamentary committee vote on the draft resolution by Norbert Lins (EPP, Germany) is scheduled for 21 May.
According to the draft agenda for the meetings of the College of European Commissioners, the European Commission plans to present its response to the ‘End the Cage Age’ ECI on 30 June.
