04/05/2021 (Agence Europe) – If implemented, the new commitments made by countries present at Joe Biden’s international climate summit (see EUROPE 12704/14) would lead to global warming of 2.4˚C by the end of the century, according to an estimate released on Tuesday 4 May by Climate Action Tracker, a consortium formed by research institutes Climate Analytics and New Climate Institute. If this were to lead to an improvement of -0.2 degrees compared to the figure Climate Action Tracker was previously predicting before these new announcements, the Paris Agreement’s goal of containing the rise in the global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels – with a goal of the rise being 1.5°C – would not therefore be met. “Our warming estimate from current policies is 2.9˚C – still nearly twice what it should be”, noted Bill Hare, CEO of Climate Analytics.
