Hydrogen’s contribution to decarbonising European economy could exceed EU projections, according to Hydrogen4EU project

Hydrogen’s contribution to the decarbonisation of the European Union’s energy system could go far beyond the EU’s hydrogen projections, according to a report published on Tuesday 4 May by the cross-sectoral research project Hydrogen4EU.

While the European Commission’s hydrogen strategy aims to produce up to 10 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen in the EU by 2030 (see EUROPE 12523/1), the report, produced by a consortium of IFP Energies Nouvelles, SINTEF, and Deloitte, estimates that the total demand for hydrogen in the EU could exceed 30 million tonnes by that time.

According to the paper, this demand could even exceed 100 million tonnes by 2050.

In both scenarios examined by the report, low-carbon hydrogen plays a key role in supporting the deployment of renewable hydrogen, with this form of hydrogen only really developing after 2030.

Our models have shown that hydrogen will be essential for steel, chemicals, and heavy-duty transportation, and that a mix of renewable and low-carbon hydrogen is best placed to deliver on the Climate Law’s net zero target”, said Johannes Trüby, director in Deloitte’ sEconomic Advisory division.
