On Monday 12 April, the European Commission published an implementing regulation imposing provisional customs duties on imports of aluminium flat-rolled products from China.
The new tariffs, which range from 19.3% to 46.7%, come into effect immediately.
The European Commission accuses China of maintaining overcapacity in the steel and aluminium sectors, which causes unfair competition for European producers.
The latter had filed a complaint with the European Commission arguing that Chinese imports adversely affected them.
Gerd Goetz, Director General of European Aluminium, the association behind the complaint, said: “We are grateful the Commission is taking the necessary steps to protect our industry against unfair competition”.
On 30 March, the Commission had imposed definitive duties on another type of aluminium due to another complaint (see EUROPE 12689/9).
