12/03/2021 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission and the EU High Representative found in a report published on Friday 12 March that in 2020 the ‘one country, two systems’ principle continued to be implemented as foreseen in Macao’s Basic Law. Fundamental rights and freedoms continued to be generally respected, while the rule of law was upheld under the Basic Law, the report notes, but points to increasing self-censorship by the media and the persistence of discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Macau’s economy, which is mainly dependent on gambling and tourism, has been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic, and GDP has fallen sharply. The EU remained Macao’s second largest trading partner in goods and third largest foreign investor. See the report: https://bit.ly/3eABW4G (CG)
