12/03/2021 (Agence Europe) – The Council of the EU decided on Friday 12 March to revoke the EU framework for sanctions against those identified as responsible for the misappropriation of Egyptian public funds and, to this effect, to lift the restrictive measures in force against the nine Egyptians. They are former President Muhammad Hosni el Sayed Mubarak (deceased); his wife, Suzanne Thabet; his sons, Alaa Mohammed Hosni el Sayed Mubarak and Gamal al Din Muhammad Hosni el Sayed Mubarak; and their respective wives, Heidi Mahmoud Magdy Hussein Rasekh and Khadiga Mahmoud el Gammal. The former Ministers of Tourism, Mohamed Zohir Mohamed Wahed Garrana, of Interior, Habib Ibrahim Habib el Adly, and the wife of the latter, Elham Sayed Salem Sharshar, are also affected. These sanctions, initially adopted in 2011 (see EUROPE 10341/3), were aimed in particular at helping the Egyptian authorities to recover misappropriated public funds. (CG)
