23/02/2021 (Agence Europe) – Dutch MEP Tineke Strik (Greens/EFA) was appointed on Tuesday 23 February as rapporteur for the investigative group of the European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, tasked with looking into the activities of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, Frontex, she said on Twitter. Her report will set out the main findings of the survey. The investigative group held its constitutive meeting on 23 February. As for Roberta Metsola (EPP, Malta), who manages the group, the enquiry should “bring clear answers” to the questions raised by the functioning of Frontex, in particular regarding suspicions of pushbacks and lack of transparency, and should result in “recommendations to improve” the agency. Commissioner Ylva Johansson once again criticised the agency and its director, Fabrice Leggeri, during an in camera discussion in the Committee on Budgets, reported Politico on 23 February, when she once again deplored its unwillingness to recruit fundamental rights officers.
