Ursula von der Leyen insists on need to create ‘Single Market Emergency Instrument’ in event of crisis

23/02/2021 (Agence Europe)On the first day of the 2021 ‘Industry Days’, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has emphasised the importance of creating a ‘Single Market Emergency Instrument’ to deal with future crises. Noting the multiplication of restrictive cross-border measures at the time of the first wave of the pandemic, Ms von der Leyen is of the opinion that it was time to reflect on a “structural solution” to ensure the free movement of goods, services and persons. The aim is to be able to speed up decision-making whenever a critical situation arises, she explained. The European Commission has lifted more than 30 measures restricting the functioning of the single market since the beginning of the pandemic. (PH)
