23/02/2021 (Agence Europe) – Following the EU’s reaction (see EUROPE 12663/2), on Tuesday 23 February the Foreign Ministers of Germany, France, Italy, the UK, Canada, the USA and Japan and the EU High Representative strongly condemned the violence committed by Burmese security forces against peaceful demonstrations. “Anyone who responds violently to peaceful demonstrations must be held accountable”, they warn in a joint statement. They believe the military and police must exercise the utmost restraint and respect human rights and international law. “The use of live ammunition against unarmed people is unacceptable”, they insist. Ministers also condemn the intimidation and oppression of those opposing the coup and demand an end to the “systematic targeting of demonstrators, doctors, civil society and journalists, and the lifting of the state of emergency”.
