Europe taking a leading role in hydrogen projects, according to a report by Hydrogen Council

Of the 228 large-scale hydrogen projects announced worldwide, 126 are in Europe, according to a report published on Wednesday 17 February by the Hydrogen Council, a global initiative bringing together companies active in the hydrogen sector.

Produced in cooperation with the McKinsey consulting firm, this document shows a rapid acceleration of hydrogen projects, particularly in Europe, Asia and Australia, supported by the implementation of national hydrogen strategies in more than 30 countries around the world.

According to the report, if all 228 projects go ahead, total investment will reach more than $300 billion in spending by 2030, or about 1.4% of total investment in the energy sector.

Around 45% of this total concerns Europe, the report points out, while specifying that 80 billion dollars relate to projects that are already in the planning phase, have been the subject of a final investment decision or are under construction, already commissioned or operational.

Both governments and investors now fully grasp the role hydrogen can play in the energy transition”, said Benoît Potier, co-chair of the Hydrogen Council, on the launch of the publication of the report.

He further called on governments, investors and industrial companies to “work together [...] to bring this potential to its full fruition”.
