New action plan launched for Baltic Sea region

The European Commission on Wednesday 17 February welcomed the adoption earlier this week of a new Action Plan for the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR).

The new action plan, adopted on Monday 15 February by the 12 Member States concerned, will guide investments during the cohesion policy programming period 2021-2027 and will seek to involve young people more in the governance process, the institution explains.

Drawing lessons from the past and simplification are at the heart of this action plan. It will thus introduce a simplified coordination and management system, reducing the number of actions (from 73 to 44, structured into 14 policy areas such as tourism, education and health), orchestrated by a trio of Presidencies.

Finally, a Baltic Sea Strategic Single Exchange Point has been established to coordinate capacity building and knowledge sharing and improve communication capacity.

As a reminder, the EUSBSR is the first macro-regional strategy of the EU. It was established in 2009 and stretches from Lapland to northern Germany and has a population of almost 85 million.
