11/02/2021 (Agence Europe) – A group of more than 500 scientists from around the world sent a letter to the European Union, the United States, Japan and South Korea on Thursday 11 February in order to alert them to the fact that burning wood as an energy source is far from being carbon neutral, even if trees are replanted. Tree regrowth takes time, “time the world does not have to solve climate change”, explains the letter. These scientists are therefore worried about “a misguided move to cut down whole trees or divert large portions of stem wood for bioenergy”, resulting in a loss of biodiversity and a release of carbon that would otherwise remain “locked up in forests”. They are therefore calling for an end to subsidies for burning wood, a “false solution” that ends up being a substitute for real carbon reductions. Read the letter: http://bit.ly/3rKuuXY (DG)
