EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT PLENARY / Yemen

European Parliament calls for political negotiations

MEPs stressed, on Thursday 11 February, that to end the war in Yemen and alleviate the current humanitarian crisis, all parties should engage in negotiations of good faith leading to viable political and security arrangements.

There can be no military solution to the conflict in Yemen and the crisis can only be resolved sustainably through an inclusive Yemeni-led and Yemeni-owned negotiation process involving all quarters of Yemeni society and all parties to the conflict”, stresses the European Parliament in the joint resolution by The Left, Greens/EFA, EPP, S&D and Renew Europe groups, which it adopted by a large majority (638 votes in favour, 12 against and 44 abstentions).

The Parliament calls on the EU and its Member States to continue dialogue with all parties to the conflict and to insist on the implementation of the Stockholm agreement and the draft UN political declaration, “as these steps are necessary on the road to de-escalation and political agreement”.

Expressing dismay at the “devastating” humanitarian crisis, the European Parliament demands that all parties fulfil their obligations to facilitate the rapid passage of humanitarian aid and unimpeded access to medical facilities. MEPs call on the EU and its Member States to mobilise additional resources and an economic rescue plan for Yemen.

The European Parliament again says that there should be an EU-wide ban on the export, sale, upgrading and maintenance of all forms of security equipment to coalition members, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

According to it, the new EU human rights sanctions regime should be deployed against officials involved in serious human rights violations in Yemen, including Saudi Arabian, Iranian and Emirati officials.
