European Commission wants to make product promotion policy “more relevant

EU policy on promoting agricultural products can support the EU plan to tackle cancer, particularly by targeting the consumption of fruit and vegetables as part of a healthy and balanced diet, along with other healthy products that are not currently consumed enough in the EU (see EUROPE 12650/1).

That is what the European Commission suggests in a report published on Thursday 11 February on the subject of information provision and promotion measures for agricultural products.

The report also says the policy can play a pivotal role in promoting “future schemes seeking to raise consumer awareness about EU sustainable food labelling, animal welfare, healthy dietary patterns and the EU Carbon Farming Initiative”.

The report acknowledges that promotion policy has demonstrated its capacity to align with new political priorities: the 2021 annual work programme has dedicated 50% of its budget to topics contributing to the objectives of the ‘farm to fork’ strategy.

The Commission believes that promotion policy can “increase its relevance” including by “becoming a central tool for delivering the objectives of the ‘farm to fork’ strategy and the upcoming Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan”.
