Consultation on revision of criteria for State aid for ‘important projects of common European interest’

The European Commission launched, on Monday 23 November, a public consultation on the revision of the criteria for determining the compatibility of State aid for ‘important project of common European interest’ (IPCEIs) with Internal Market rules.

Scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2021, this initiative aims to clarify and simplify these criteria on the basis of the results of the ‘fitness check’ of the existing State aid rules (see EUROPE 12593/9), while aligning them with the Commission’s new priorities, in particular the objectives of the Digital Agenda, the Industrial Strategy and the European Green Deal, as well as the EU’s post-Covid-19 Recovery Plan.

As a reminder, IPCEIs are strategic projects in different sectors that require joint investments by governments and industries in several EU countries, such as the Alliance for Electric Batteries.

The consultation period will close on 21 December.
