EU Council validates agreement with China on geographical indications

The Member States of the European Union gave final approval to the EU-China Geographical Indications Agreement on Monday 23 November. It provides for the protection of 100 geographical designations for each of the two parties, so that the products concerned are protected against imitations on both markets (see EUROPE 12600/11)

This will boost European exports to China and strengthen their market position”, said German Trade Minister Peter Altmaier. Last year, China was the third most important destination for European agri-food products.

The agreement is expected to enter into force in early 2021. After four years, it will include 175 additional European and Chinese geographical indications. (Original version in French by Léa Marchal)
