SolarPower Europe and WindEurope, two organisations representing the European solar and wind energy industry respectively, launched a ‘Renewable Hydrogen Coalition’ on Monday 23 November to make Europe the world leader in electrolytically produced hydrogen based on electricity from renewable energy sources. The initiative was welcomed by the European Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson.
Supported by the company Breakthrough Energy, the coalition will establish a “high-level and interdisciplinary network” of innovators, entrepreneurs and business leaders from the renewable hydrogen community to “empower Europe to build on its flourishing renewables industry, create a world-class electrolyser industry, and develop the business models and markets that will make renewable hydrogen mainstream”, says the press release issued by the organisations.
“In order to ensure that the European Commission’s ambitious climate targets are met, and that all sectors are decarbonised before 2050, renewable hydrogen provides the missing link, and the Renewable Hydrogen Coalition is ready to amplify Europe’s position on this technology”, said Walburga Hemetsberger, CEO of SolarPower Europe.
