Ship emissions, beginning of 75th session of IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee

16/11/2020 (Agence Europe)From Monday 16 to Friday 20 November, the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will hold its 75th session, which will focus on the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the maritime sector, in Geneva, Switzerland. This meeting will be an opportunity for representatives of IMO Member States to discuss the draft amendments recently approved by the IMO in a working group, which aim to introduce new energy efficiency requirements for ships (see EUROPE 12589/20). If these draft amendments are validated by the Committee, they could be proposed for adoption at the MEPC’s next session, to be held in June 2021. Considering these amendments largely insufficient, the NGO Carbon Market Watch, for its part, called on the delegations to veto them and to “stand on the right side of history”. (DG)
