EU invests over €280 million in 120 new projects under the LIFE programme

The European Commission has approved the investment of more than €280 million from the EU budget in 120 new projects under the LIFE programme, the institution announced on Monday 16 November. All these projects, with a total value of €590 million, have been selected to be eligible for EU co-financing.

Around €220 million is allocated to projects on environment and resource efficiency, nature and biodiversity, environmental governance and information and more than €60 million will support projects on climate change mitigation and adaptation as well as governance and information projects. Many of these projects are transnational.

Nature and Biodiversity: The 34 selected projects will support the implementation of the EU Birds (79/409/EEC) and Habitats (92/43/EEC) directives and the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030. The EU will co-finance them to the tune of €133 million (out of a total budget of €221 million).

Environment and rational use of resources. Forty-seven projects with a total value of €208 million will receive EU co-financing of €76 million. These projects cover actions in six areas: - the air; - environment and health ; - resource efficiency; - the circular economy; - waste; - water.

Environmental governance and information. Eight projects worth almost €17 million, with an EU contribution of just over €9 million, will raise awareness of environmental issues among the general public and help public authorities to promote, monitor and enforce EU environmental legislation.

Mitigation of climate change. Sixteen projects will receive just under €32 million in EU funding (total budget of around €86 million).

Adaptation to climate change. Fifteen projects will receive €26 million of EU funding (total budget €50 million).

Governance and climate information. Three projects will receive just under €4 million (out of a total budget of €7 million). (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
