19/10/2020 (Agence Europe) – The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), on Monday 19 October, strongly criticised the work of the new European Labour Authority (ELA). The trade unions had reported a series of cases of abuse to the Authority a year ago, when the Regulation establishing the Authority (see EUROPE 12350/20) came into force. “One year later, the only action taken by the ELA was to report these cases in a letter to the Member States concerned. The people involved have still not been contacted by the ELA”, the Confederation deplores in a press release. The trade unions sent a letter to the interim director of the ELA and to the Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights, Nicolas Schmit, in which they expressed their “concerns” about the “operationality” of the new European Agency.
