The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe deplores Russia’s withdrawal from discussions on disappearance of flight MH17

19/10/2020 (Agence Europe)Romanian Socialist Titus Corlăţean, rapporteur of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe on the destruction of Flight MH17 over Ukraine in 2014, said on Monday 19 October that “the Russian withdrawal from the trilateral talks [Netherlands/Australia/Russia – ed.] (sends) a painful signal, first and foremost to the victims’ families”. Announced on Thursday 15 October (see EUROPE 12583/7), this withdrawal follows the complaint brought before the European Court of Human Rights by the Netherlands against Russia. This is a “procedural remedy” in support of individual applications filed in 2018 by families of Dutch victims and not an “unfriendly act”, Mr. Corlăţean said. He called for the resumption of discussions between all parties and announced that he would carry out visits related to his report “as soon as the health situation allows”. (VL)
