The Monitoring Committee of the Council of Europe strongly condemned the new crackdown on political opposition and civil dissidence decided in recent months in Turkey by unanimously approving a draft resolution based on a report to be debated on 23 October. “The situation has not improved since 2019” and “many of the issues cited in 2017 when the procedure was reopened remain a matter of concern”, says the Monitoring Committee, which lists in the resolution a series of measures it expects the Turkish authorities to take in order to fill gaps in democracy, the Rule of law and human rights. This will require “strong and genuine political will”, stresses the committee, which also notes that “serious concerns” have been raised about Turkey’s external actions, including military operations. The two rapporteurs, Thomas Hammarberg (Socialist, Sweden) and John Howell (Conservative, United Kingdom), said the issue would now be included in future Monitoring Committee reports.
