Teachers paid 16 times better in some European countries than in others

05/10/2020 (Agence Europe)Teachers’ salaries vary widely between the different Member States. This is the unsurprising finding of a report published on Monday 5 October by the European Commission's Eurydice Network on the occasion of World Teachers Day. This document, comprising more than 200 pages, covers the 2018-19 salaries of teachers and headteachers in public pre-primary, primary and general secondary schools, in 42 European education systems. It shows, for example, that statutory starting gross salaries can range from around 5,000 euros to more than 80,000 euros per year, depending on the country. Similarly, these starting salaries can increase from 12% to 116% over the course of a teacher’s career. The average number of years needed to reach the top of the pay scale ranges from 6 years in the United Kingdom (Scotland) to 42 years in Hungary.
