The EU, through its High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, welcomed on Saturday 3 October the signing of the peace agreement on the same day between the Transitional Government of Sudan and the Sudan Revolutionary Movements in Juba (South Sudan) as “a historic achievement paving the way for inclusive and comprehensive peace in Sudan”.
In a statement issued on behalf of the EU27, High Representative Josep Borrell paid tribute to the role played by South Sudan “in hosting and mediating the Sudanese peace talks”.
He called on all stakeholders to implement this peace agreement “in good faith and with a continued spirit of collaboration for the benefit of the Sudanese people, who deserve and wish for peace, stability and economic development”.
The rebels who have not yet joined the agreement, “in particular the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North-Abdalaziz Al-Hilu and the Sudan Liberation Movement-Abdul Wahid Al-Nur, should follow and engage in serious negotiations with the Transitional Government”, Borrell said.
He gave assurances that the EU “will continue to support the country's political and economic transition, which offers a unique opportunity to work towards a peaceful, democratic and prosperous Sudan”. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
