30/09/2020 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 30 September, the European Commission opened the second phase of the public consultation on the revision of the European Directive (94/62) on packaging and packaging waste. Scheduled for the second quarter of 2021, this initiative aims to improve packaging design to promote reuse and recycling, increase recycled content in packaging, tackle excessive packaging and reduce packaging waste. According to figures from Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Union, the packaging sector generated around 17.8 million tonnes of plastic in Europe in 2018, making it the largest contributor of plastic waste. The first consultation period was launched on 11 June with the publication of the Roadmap (see EUROPE 12505/21). The second consultation period will close on 6 January 2021.
