Eight Member States commit to strengthen cooperation on wind turbines in Baltic Sea

The Energy Ministers of eight EU Member States (Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Finland and Sweden) signed on Wednesday 30 September a joint declaration to strengthen cooperation on offshore wind turbines in the Baltic Sea.

The declaration underlines that a cooperative regional approach could help accelerate progress in terms of offshore energy and thus contribute to the European objective of climate neutrality by 2050.

Indeed, the Commission estimates that, by that time, “the EU contribution of offshore wind energy will amount at least 20 times today’s installed capacity of (12 GW)”.

In order to improve their cooperation, the signatories of the declaration agreed to create a new specific work area within the Baltic Energy Market Interconnection Plan (BEMIP) High-level Group.

According to the Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson, this High-Level Group made it possible to “create a truly integrated regional market”. This tradition of cooperation “will be essential” to respond to the crucial steps that will follow, she then added.

On Monday, the same countries committed themselves to restoring the Baltic Sea waters to good quality (see EUROPE 12569/12).
