When Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy met with Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia and Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani on Tuesday 29 September, he called on them to continue the reform momentum in the period ahead.
Borrell particularly highlighted reforms in the justice sector, where, in the short term, the recommendations of the Venice Commission should be taken on board with regard to the selection process for Supreme Court judges.
According to the press release issued by the European External Action Service, Borrell also welcomed the “considerable progress” made by Georgia in implementing its commitments under the Association Agreement.
With parliamentary elections scheduled for 31 October, the High Representative underlined the importance of the entire electoral process taking place in line with international standards and being transparent, inclusive and credible. “These elections offer an opportunity to demonstrate Georgia’s attachment to delivering on its commitments and its democratic credentials”, he added.
EU and Georgian representatives also discussed the deteriorating security and human rights situations along the Administrative Boundary Line of South Ossetia. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
