06/07/2020 (Agence Europe) – On Friday, 3 July, MPs of the Bundestag adopted the German law endorsing the objective of closing down all coal-fired power stations and mines by 2038 (see EUROPE 12405/29). Heavily criticised by environmental NGOs for being too far in the future, this law provides, in particular, for €40 billion to be granted to mining regions to help them in this transition and a total of €4.35 billion in compensation for coal-fired power station operators. Although the law provides for reviews in 2026 and 2029 to determine whether Germany can withdraw from coal-fired power generation in 2035, 3 years ahead of schedule, Greenpeace believes the law is “a disaster” for the climate.
