06/07/2020 (Agence Europe) – The Council of Europe Commission against Racism (ECRI) warns against racial profiling and calls on European countries to act decisively to ensure that cases identified in national police forces remain isolated events (https://bit.ly/2ZHvZd5 ). “Racial profiling must be expressly prohibited by law”, stresses ECRI, recalling that, according to the European Court of Human Rights, it can lead to “institutionalised racism”. Measures were called for to ensure diversity in the recruitment of law enforcement personnel and the establishment of independent bodies to investigate allegations of abuse. In ECRI’s view, European policy-makers must capitalise on recent events to send a clear message of zero tolerance of racism and discrimination in policing. (VL)
