New asylum law criticised by UNHCR

30/06/2020 (Agence Europe)On Tuesday, 30 June, the Commission indicated that it was analysing a new Hungarian asylum law, adopted in mid-June, that allows people who arrive at the border and wish to apply for asylum in Hungary to be sent back to embassies or consulates in the neighbouring country. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) asked Budapest to withdraw this law, which in its opinion, will permit the refoulement of asylum seekers. The Commission expressed its concern as to the existence of any measures that could limit the right to asylum. With regard to this Hungarian law, the institution nevertheless indicated that the use of embassies could be useful as a complement but could not replace the European rules that provide for the obligation to receive asylum applications filed within the territory, either in transit zones or during border procedures.
