30/06/2020 (Agence Europe) – Reporters Without Borders (RSF) called on Tuesday 30 June on the German Presidency of the EU Council to push through the draft regulation aimed at linking the allocation of European aid to respect for the rule of law and including press freedom. In 14 countries of the EU and the Balkan region, RSF observed a "temptation to restrict or control information related to the health crisis". In particular, incidents have occurred in six EU countries - including Germany - where the press freedom situation is usually considered to be good, the organisation noted in the framework of its Observatory 19 project. Finally, RSF notes that the pandemic has enabled states such as Hungary to adopt temporary laws, some of which have proved to be harmful for freedom of the press. (AC)
