19/06/2020 (Agence Europe) – On the initiative of Tilly Metz (Greens/EFA, Luxembourg), 55 MEPs signed a joint letter to the European Commission on Tuesday 16 June urging it to take into account the European Parliament's opposition to the import of genetically modified food and feed. Since December 2015, the European Parliament has opposed such authorisations 43 times through the adoption of resolutions, the signatories argue. Yet, according to them, the European Commission has nevertheless authorised 42 of these GMOs. The letter therefore requests that, for the genetically modified soybean 'MON 87708 × MON 89788 × A5547-127', the new Commission should this time take into account Parliament's opposition, expressed on 14 May with 477 MEPs in favour of the resolution, and reject the import authorisation. “This would simply be honouring the promise outlined in the European Green Deal,” the MEPs said.
