19/06/2020 (Agence Europe) – The spokesman for the European External Action Service called on Friday 19 June for the release of prominent Chinese human rights lawyer Yu Wensheng, who was sentenced in camera on 17 June 2020 to four years in prison for “subversion”, after more than 900 days in detention. “Under China's Criminal Procedure Law and international law obligations, defendants have the right to a fair trial, held without undue delay, to proper defence and to access to a lawyer of their choosing”, declared the EEAS spokesman, saying Yu Wensheng’s rights had not been respected. The EU also expects China to conduct thorough investigations into all reported cases of arbitrary detention, ill-treatment and torture of human rights defenders and their families. (CG)
