Mr Borrell denounces US decisions on possible sanctions against ICC

11/06/2020 (Agence Europe)On Thursday, 11 June, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell denounced the US president’s decision to authorise economic sanctions against International Criminal Court (ICC) officials who would participate in investigating or prosecuting US military personnel without the consent of the United States (see EUROPE 12231/22), calling it “very bad news”. “This is a matter of serious concern [...]. The court has been playing a key role in providing international justice and addressing the gravest international crimes”, he explained, adding that the court was a “key factor in bringing justice and peace”. Mr Borrell stressed the EU’s support of the ICC, which must be “respected and supported by all nations(see EUROPE 12496/4). The EU will analyse the US decision. (CG)
