European Parliament to adopt resolution to provide better protection for seasonal workers

Following a decision by the European Parliament Conference of Presidents on Thursday 28 May, the Renew Europe political group was given the task of preparing a resolution on the issue of seasonal workers in agriculture, social services and tourism for the June plenary session (scheduled for 17 June).

Preparation of the resolution will be the responsibility of Dragoș Pîslaru (Renew Europe, Romania), who is a member of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs (EMPL). The MEP spoke on the subject of frontier workers and seasonal workers in a debate with Nicolas Schmit, the Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights, on Tuesday 26 May (see EUROPE 12494/23).

At the time, he criticised the very precarious situation in which thousands of seasonal workers find themselves, particularly in German and Dutch slaughterhouses, where some of them had died from Covid-19 without any medical monitoring, and explained that this situation was not the result of the health crisis, but had been going on for years.

He then stressed the need to make progress on the negotiations to revise Regulation 883/2004 on the coordination of social security systems, which has been at a standstill since December (see EUROPE 12387/18). The MEP also emphasised the European Labour Authority’s pivotal role in the fight against abuse and highlighted the need to move more quickly and strengthen its role.

We have been informed that the draft resolution should be completed within the next week. (Original version in French by Pascal Hansens)
