A new report by the EU Food and Veterinary Office (FVO) on live animal transports in Romania, published on 24 April by the European Commission, identifies severe shortcomings with regard to animal welfare. The animals were not examined in accordance with EU rules, control reports are missing and not enough qualified staff was provided.
Only recently, the global animal welfare organisation ’FOUR PAWS’ rescued 180 sheep in Romania after the transport ship capsized, “a tragedy that could have been avoided”, according to the organisation.
‘FOUR PAWS’ urges the European Commission to start infringement proceedings against Romania for breaching EU animal welfare rules. The organisation once again demands an EU ban on live animal transports.
“The (FVO) report clearly indicates Romania’s neglect of EU transport regulations. It's obvious that the animals are not sufficiently protected”, says Martina Stephany of ‘FOUR PAWS’.
