Commission offers flexibility to fruit and vegetable sector in event of phytosanitary damage

The European Commission submitted on Monday 30 March a delegated act amending delegated regulation 2017/891 as regards the calculation of the value of marketed production of producer organisations (POs) in the fruit and vegetable sector.

The objective of this delegated act (submitted to the EU Council and the European Parliament) is to provide greater flexibility in calculating the value of the marketed production of POs in cases where their fruit and vegetable production faces damage caused by diseases or harmful organisms “making the production unusable for both consumption and processing”.

This damage affects the financial stability of producer organisations and puts at risk their recognition.

The flexibility offered will strengthen the resilience of the POs concerned in the event of phytosanitary damage. This flexibility could help producer organisations to adapt their strategies and take appropriate measures within their operational programmes, the Commission says.

In recent years, crop damage caused by phytosanitary factors has increased (Xylella fastidiosa, tomato brown rugose fruit virus, or stink bug).
