17/03/2020 (Agence Europe) – European and British negotiators confirmed on Tuesday 17 March that the second round of talks on the future relationship between the European Union and the United Kingdom cannot be held on 18, 19 and 20 March, either physically or remotely. Both sides are currently discussing how best to “continue the discussions”. The UK Government confirmed in a press release that the draft agreements would soon be presented to each other. It recalled that the extension of the post-Brexit transition period, which ends on 31 December 2020, is not enshrined in British law, whereas the British press considers this extension inevitable. When questioned, Eric Mamer, spokesman for the Commission, considered that it was too early to answer this question. Any extension must be decided before 1 July. (SP)
