Talks in European Parliament for creation of special parliamentary committees

The European Parliament is continuing its internal changes. Having welcomed new MEPs after the departure of the British, the deputies are now considering setting up a special committee on artificial intelligence and another on disinformation. A new cancer forum and a tax forum have also been proposed.

No formal decision has yet been taken by the Conference of Presidents, and none is expected this week, according to a source in Parliament’s press service. Discussions are currently taking place at the political group level. However, among the MEPs, the idea of a special committee on artificial intelligence at least seems already to be well established.

In order to set up a special parliamentary committee, a majority of the leaders of the political groups must support the idea in a vote in the Conference of Presidents. For logistical reasons, the number of special committees must also be limited, given that the current legislature already has 20 committees and two sub-committees.

The previous legislature had the same number of standing committees. Furthermore, five special committees (TAX, TAX2, TAX3, terrorism, and pesticides) and two committees of inquiry (on Dieselgate and money laundering) were created between 2014 and 2019.
