20/01/2020 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission announced on Monday 20 January that it has approved the application for the inclusion of 'Arseniko Naxou' in the register of protected designations of origin (PDO) at EU level. ‘Arseniko Naxou’ is a matured hard cheese made in the traditional way from unpasteurised goat's and sheep's milk. It has a sweet/savoury, pungent and intense taste. This cheese is produced and matured in several municipalities on the island of Naxos and the Small Cyclades. The manufacturing process is closely linked to the knowledge of the cheesemaker, who is able to know the period of manufacture of the product according to the climatic conditions of the region and the composition of the vegetation. This new designation will join more than 1,460 already protected food products listed in the eAmbrosia database. (LC)
