20/01/2020 (Agence Europe) – Towards a “second CETA”? This is what is emerging from statements by the head of the Walloon government, Elio di Rupo (PS), on Monday 20 January on Belgian radio La Première. “We are totally opposed to this treaty as it stands [...] and we will not give full powers to the federal government to negotiate”, said the Walloon socialist. He pointed to the agricultural sector’s concerns about “massive” beef imports, which also raise health concerns, calling on the EU to better apply environmental and social criteria in these agreements. It should be remembered that this same region had temporarily delayed the signing of the trade agreement with Canada, known as the ‘CETA’, in October 2016. (HD)
