In order to accelerate investment in Africa’s energy sector and stimulate sustainable growth and job creation, the European Commission published on Monday 18 November 11 recommendations from the ‘Africa-Europe High Level Platform for Sustainable Energy Investments in Africa’.
These recommendations concern 11 key areas: policies and regulations; instruments for the implementation of projects ; financing and fiscal measures; strengthening capacities; traditional distribution; off-grid sector; transport; production; regional integration through energy supply; energy efficiency; clean cooking (food preparation that is not based on the use of open fires or solid fuels).
Through these recommendations, the Africa-Europe Platform promotes an integrated approach to energy distribution, strengthening regional electricity trade and facilitating increased investment in renewable energy, energy efficiency and clean cooking solutions.
While these recommendations were presented on 12 November at the Africa-Europe Platform’s annual plenary meeting in Johannesburg, the African and European stakeholders forming the platform stressed the need to implement them as soon as possible.
In the absence of major changes, nearly 600 million people in Africa will still have no access to electricity by 2030, according to a report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) published in May.
