EU is mobilising €79 million in support for public services and livelihoods for victims of conflict

The European Commission released €79 million on 7 November for the people of Yemen, victims of the conflict that has caused an unprecedented humanitarian crisis – the worst in the world – and has been destroying the livelihoods of Yemenis since 2015.

This humanitarian and development assistance will enable support for essential public services, such as primary and hospital health care; access to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities, food and education, improved waste management; and strengthening people’s ability to sustain their livelihoods in a country where the economy is stalled. This will include stimulating the private sector in the agri-industrial sector.

In addition to the EU’s humanitarian assistance to the people of Yemen, investing in development is crucial”, commented European Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development Neven Mimica in a statement.

This new support is in addition to the €440 million in humanitarian aid and €323 million in development aid provided by the EU in response to the crisis. It is in line with the February 2019 EU Council conclusions, which focused on the situation of vulnerable communities affected by ongoing hostilities. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
