The EU Council of Ministers adopted without debate on Friday 8 November three legislative acts to extend by one year the Protocol of the Fisheries Agreement between the EU and the Islamic Republic of Mauritania (see EUROPE 12340/11).
The current Protocol expires on 15 November 2019. Last July, the EU Council gave the Commission a mandate to negotiate a new fisheries agreement between the EU and Mauritania (see EUROPE 12291/28).
Pending the finalisation of these negotiations, the Commission had reached, 4 September last, an agreement in the form of an exchange of letters extending the Protocol with Mauritania for one year to allow Union vessels to carry out their fishing activities in these waters.
The one-year Protocol retains the current fishing opportunities for EU vessels (lobster and crab, Black hake, tuna vessels, pelagic fishing vessels...).
The financial contribution paid by the EU is 61.6 million euros for one year.
