24/10/2019 (Agence Europe) – In a resolution on the situation of LGBTI people in Uganda, adopted on Thursday 24 October by the European Parliament (521 votes, 4 against and 110 abstentions), MEPs express serious concern about the possible reappearance in the political debate of the draft law against homosexuality, which includes the death penalty for "aggravated homosexuality". They take note of the statement by President Museveni's spokesman denying any intention to do so and invite the government not to reverse this statement. The EU delegation in Uganda is invited to continue to closely monitor the situation of LGBTI people and to actively support civil society organisations, human rights defenders and LGBTI people. The title of the resolution, initially dedicated to the possible draft law, was modified at the request of the right. (AN)
