21/10/2019 (Agence Europe) – The European Parliament's Civil Liberties Committee (LIBE) discussed a draft resolution urging Member States to do more in terms of searching for and rescuing migrants at sea on Monday evening, 21 October, on the sidelines of the Strasbourg plenary session. At the initiative of Juan Fernando Lopez Aguilar (S&D, Spain), the draft resolution, which the parliamentary committee had not adopted as of press time, recalls that 933 people died in the Mediterranean Sea in 2019, although these figures have been falling since 2015. Member States are urged to provide sufficient vessels and search and rescue equipment at sea and to seek the assistance of NGO vessels. The resolution was to be adopted, but amendments were proposed with the intent of reducing its scope. EUROPE will continue to follow this story. (SP)
